그래서 뭐, 내 맘인데? 어쩔티비
geu-rae-seo mwo, nae ma-min-de? eo-jjeol-ti-bi
“So what? It's my call. Whatever~”
Slang of the week · playground comeback turned meme
Word by word
The line, explained
Every language has a comeback that children love and adults pretend to hate. In Korea, around 2021, it was 어쩔티비, and it spread from playgrounds to group chats to variety shows in what felt like a week. Today's line is a stubborn drama heroine being told she shouldn't have dyed her hair pink. She doesn't argue. She shrugs, says it is her decision, and finishes with the most childish word available. It is rude, cheeky and very funny, all at once.
그래서 means "so, therefore", and 뭐 is "what". 그래서 뭐 is the Korean "so what?", a challenge thrown back at whoever is criticising you. 내 맘인데 is 내, "my", and 맘, the short form of 마음, "heart, mind, will", plus 인데, "it is, so…". The -ㄴ데 ending leaves the sentence hanging and invites the other person to finish it: "it's my choice, so…?". Said with a rising tone, it means "what's it to you?". The ㅁ links forward, so 맘인데 sounds like ma-min-de.
어쩔티비 starts from 어쩌라고, "what do you want me to do about it?", built on 어쩌다, a contraction of 어떻게 하다, "to do how". The slang clips it to 어쩔 and tacks on 티비, the Korean spelling of "TV". Why TV? The most popular explanation is "so what, go watch TV", but most kids would tell you it just sounds funny, and that is the real reason it spread. Four bouncy syllables make it perfect for chanting at a sibling.
Grammatically, 어쩔티비 is a fixed retort: it does not conjugate and takes no particles. It stands alone or ends a sentence. The fun is in chaining variants: 저쩔티비, a nonsense echo; 안물티비, from 안 물어봤어, "I didn't ask"; 안궁티비, from 안 궁금해, "I'm not curious"; and escalations like 어쩔냉장고, swapping in a fridge for the TV. Never say it to elders or bosses. Even plain 어쩌라고 is rude; with 티비 attached it is rude and childish too.
Swap the comeback to set your cheekiness level: 어쩔래 (what are you gonna do, a mild dare), 안물안궁 (didn't ask, don't care, from 안 물어봤고 안 궁금해), 저쩔티비 (the nonsense echo), 어쩌라고 (so what do you want, blunt and adult). Each fits after 내 맘인데? and each shifts the character a little. For full effect, deliver 어쩔티비 with a straight face and walk away. If your friend fires back 저쩔티비, congratulations: you are now in a ten-year-old's argument, Korean style.
Grammar · 어쩔티비 (standalone comeback)
어쩔티비: the playground “so what?”
어쩔티비 clips 어쩌라고, "what do you want me to do about it?", to 어쩔 and adds 티비 ("TV"); a popular explanation is "so what, go watch TV". It is a fixed retort: it does not conjugate or take particles and appears alone or at the end of a sentence. Variants chain together: 저쩔티비 (nonsense echo), 안물티비 (from 안 물어봤어, "didn't ask"), 안궁티비 (안 궁금해, "not curious"), 어쩔냉장고 (swapping in bigger appliances). It is childish and cheeky; never use it with elders or bosses. The plain, adult version 어쩌라고 is blunt and rude.
- 늦었다고? 어쩔티비.I'm late? So what.
- 어쩔티비 저쩔티비 안물티비!So what, so whatever, didn't ask!
- 그래서 어쩌라고?So what do you want me to do about it? (blunt, not slang)
Why it hits
어쩔티비 exploded around 2021 and 2022 among Korean children, then spread to adults through memes and variety shows, where celebrities use it to sound cheeky. It is so tied to kids' bickering that parents online joked about hearing it at every dinner. Using it as an adult is knowing silliness, which is exactly its charm.
