Word by word

The line, explained

Some vows are so old they come with armour. 일편단심 is a four-character idiom built from classical Chinese, and Koreans have used it for over six hundred years to describe loyalty that will not bend. Today's line drops it into a sweet, mid-tempo idol chorus, the kind that ends with the members pointing at the camera. "My heart is single-hearted: only you." It is a grand old word in a bubblegum setting, and that contrast is exactly why K-pop loves it.

내 마음은 is 내, "my", 마음, "heart, mind", and the topic marker 은: "as for my heart". 일편단심 is four Sino-Korean syllables, each from a Chinese character. 일, 一, is "one". 편, 片, is "piece" or "slice". 단, 丹, is "red", the colour of cinnabar and of sincerity. 심, 心, is "heart". Together: "one piece of red heart", a heart that is single, sincere and undivided. Koreans rarely think about the parts, just as English speakers do not dissect "wholehearted".

너 하나야 is 너, "you", 하나, "one", and 야, the casual "is" after a vowel. 너 하나 means "you alone, just you", a very common lyric phrase. Literally the line says "my heart is one-red-heart, you alone", with 일편단심 sitting between the topic and the answer almost like an adverb. A more prose-like version would add 뿐, "only": 내 마음은 일편단심 너 하나뿐이야. Songs prefer the shorter rhythm, which lands on the beat.

In ordinary sentences 일편단심 is a noun. 아빠는 엄마한테 일편단심이야, "Dad has eyes only for Mom", uses it with 이다. 일편단심으로 기다렸어, "I waited with unwavering devotion", adds 으로, "with". It can also modify a noun: 일편단심 사랑. Its history is heavy. In the most famous use, the Goryeo loyalist Jeong Mong-ju wrote that his 일편단심 for his king would never change, even if he died a hundred times. He was assassinated soon afterwards, and the poem made him a symbol of loyalty.

Swap the object of devotion and the vow still holds: 일편단심 그대 하나야 (only you, with poetic 그대), 당신 하나야 (only you, as a spouse might say), 오빠 하나야 (only my oppa, a fan's pledge), 우리 팀 하나야 (only our team, for sports fans). In fandom talk, someone loyal to one idol for years is praised as 일편단심, and switching your favourite member is its opposite. Say it with a grin and you are joking about loyalty; say it straight and you are making a promise.

Grammar · 일편단심

일편단심: four characters of unwavering devotion

일편단심 is a 사자성어, a four-character Sino-Korean idiom: 일 (一, one), 편 (片, piece), 단 (丹, red) and 심 (心, heart), "one piece of sincere red heart" that never changes. It behaves as a noun: 일편단심이다 (to be devoted), 일편단심으로 (with single-minded devotion), 일편단심 사랑 (devoted love). In lyrics it often stands bare before the object of devotion, as here, paired with 너 하나 or 오직 너, "only you". Once about loyalty to a king, it now covers lovers, teams and idols.

  • 우리 아빠는 엄마한테 일편단심이야.My dad has eyes only for my mom.
  • 십 년째 일편단심으로 이 팀만 응원해.I've backed this one team, single-mindedly, for ten years.
  • 내 일편단심은 변하지 않아.My devotion won't change.

Why it hits

일편단심 echoes a famous late-Goryeo poem in which the scholar Jeong Mong-ju swore his red heart would stay loyal to his king even if he died a hundred times over. Today the phrase has been happily borrowed for love songs, loyal fans and devoted husbands. Declaring yourself 일편단심 to your idol is a fan's highest vow.
