지금 뭐 해?
ji-geum mwo hae?
“What are you doing right now?”
Example line · late-night K-drama phone call
Word by word
The line, explained
Midnight. A phone buzzes. The screen lights up with a name the heroine has been trying not to think about, and the message is only three words: 지금 뭐 해? What are you doing right now? In Korean dating culture, this little question is famous. Nobody sends it because they want a schedule. They send it because they want an excuse to talk, and both people know it.
지금 means now or right now. Like other time words, it usually comes at the start of a sentence. It is incredibly common: 지금 가 (I'm going now), 지금 어디야? (where are you now?). Here it adds urgency and intimacy. Not just what do you do in general, but what are you doing at this exact moment, while I'm thinking about you.
뭐 means what, a casual shortening of 무엇. You will hear it everywhere, and it has many lives: 뭐? means what? when you didn't hear, 뭐야? means what is this? or what's going on?, and a sulky 뭐야 can mean ugh, seriously. In this question it is simple: what. Korean question words don't need to move to the front, so 뭐 sits right where the answer would go.
해 is 하다, to do, in casual form. 하다 is the most useful verb in Korean, because so many other verbs are built on it: 공부하다 (to study), 일하다 (to work), 사랑하다 (to love). In casual speech, 하다 always becomes 해. With a rising tone it is a question; said flat, it is a statement. So 공부해 can mean I'm studying, and 공부해? means are you studying?
The classic replies are 그냥 (just, nothing much), 그냥 있어 (just hanging around) or 너 생각 (thinking of you), which is the answer every drama audience is waiting for. Try swapping the time word in this line: 내일 뭐 해? asks about tomorrow, 주말에 뭐 해? asks about the weekend, and 오늘 밤 뭐 해? is the bold version: what are you doing tonight?
Grammar · 뭐 해?
'what are you doing?'
뭐 (what) plus 해 (casual form of 하다, to do) with a rising tone asks what someone is doing. Add a time word in front to shift it: 내일 뭐 해? (what are you doing tomorrow?), 주말에 뭐 해? (what are you up to this weekend?). It is 반말 for friends and partners; the polite version is 뭐 해요?
- 뭐 해?What are you doing?
- 내일 뭐 해?What are you doing tomorrow?
- 그냥 쉬어.Just resting.
Why it hits
In Korea, a text that just says 뭐 해? is a famous signal: it is rarely about the answer and almost always about wanting to talk. In dramas, a late-night 지금 뭐 해? call is how characters say 'I miss you' without the risk.
